Lovells Township, Michigan is a small, close-knit community of only about 626 full-time and part-time residents that call the area home. The famous AuSable River runs right though the center of this quaint town. The larger community of Grayling is only about 15 miles away, offering additional recreational, shopping and services for the residents of Lovells. One of Lovells’ favorite annual traditions is the Lovells Bridge Walk. The walk kicks off with a pancake breakfast at 8:00 am (suggested donation of $5), followed by a quick bus trip that shuttles participants from the town pavilion to the walk starting line. The Bridge Walk officially starts at 11:30 am and is followed by a luncheon back at the pavilion for a $10 suggested donation. This annual fundraiser supports Lovells’ volunteer fire department and includes a 50/50 raffle, craft show, and kid’s events. The town was originally called Maple Forest but in 1912 was renamed for the popular judge Louis Lovell who served on the eighth judicial district. The petition to change the name was signed and passed unanimously by just 19 residents.

Vision screenings play an important role in an overall health regime. People of every age should have an annual exam to make sure they are seeing their best as well as screen for potential diseases that an eye exam can reveal. Early signs of diabetes and other conditions can be detected by a comprehensive eye exam which includes dilatation that can look inside the eye to determine if symptoms of vascular disease are present. Many conditions of the eye remain silent until damage is done. Screening for glaucoma and other eye conditions could save your vision. With early detection, these conditions can be successfully treated and kept under control. It is important at any age to visit your eye doctor as vision and eye conditions change as we age. Children should see an eye doctor when they reach school age to ensure they can see correctly. If children aren’t seeing their best, it can greatly affect school work.
