What Is An Optometrist?

Posted on 09.13.13

What Is An Optometrist?Optometrist’s like ophthalmologists specialize in eye care and keeping your eyes healthy, however, an optometrist is different from an ophthalmologist in a number of ways. An optometrist is a doctor of Optometry or an O.D. For someone to become an optometrist, they have to complete undergraduate education and four years of professional education at a college of optometry. Here, these future optometrists learn primarily about the eyes and the eye processes. Many optometrists choose to go on and study further into subspecialties as well depending on their interests. O.D.’s can diagnose, treat and manage injuries, disorders of the eye as well as associated structures and diseases in addition to prescribing medications and performing certain procedures as well.

How to Choose An Eye Doctor

When choosing an optometrist in Grayling, it is important that you feel comfortable that you are choosing the right optometrist for you. Begin by asking others of their experiences look online and ask around with people you trust. When choosing your optometrist, feel free to ask questions. Common questions to ask include if they take your insurance, if they are optometrists or ophthalmologists, how long they have been in practice and if they have a specialty. It is important that you feel comfortable with your optometrist as well, so be sure you are. After your exam ask yourself if the doctor was friendly, if they were courteous and accommodating and if the exam was comfortable and if they listened to what you had to say and addressed your concerns. Although you will usually not need to see your O.D. very often, they are important for your health and you have choices. Take care of your eyes. Remember that your eyes may be injured without even noticing it. During your everyday life, remember to protect your eyes from life by wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection, take frequent breaks from the computer and staring at screens, enjoy a vitamin rich diet with lots of vitamin A for your eyes, get plenty of rest and if you notice a problem, contact your Grayling eye doctor right away.
