Taking Care Of Your Beautiful Eyes – Tips For Women Who Wear MakeupProtecting Your Eyes – Cosmetic Safety Tips

Almost half of all American women wear makeup to hide their perceived flaws. While most eye makeup is tested and retested to ensure that your eyes will be safe, it is also up to you to ensure that you protect your vision. Take a look at some of the tips offered by the FDA to better protect your eyes.

Keep It Clean – Dangerous bacteria or fungus can grow on cosmetic applicators and can be spread to your eyes causing damage or even blindness due to infection. Keep your eye care products clean to protect your eyes.

Never Share Your Eye Cosmetics – Even with your friends, germs can cause serious risks to the health of your eyes. No matter who has used a cosmetic, a friend or a tester at a store, do not use it. Use only cosmetics which are sealed and don’t share with others.

Don’t Apply Makeup While Moving – We have all seen it in the movies, the star of the show is applying eyeliner and lipstick while driving on a busy road. Not only is this distracted driving and dangerous for others, it is dangerous to you, no matter if you are driving or someone else is. Never apply eye makeup while traveling. Stop and stand still while you apply makeup to avoid injuring your eyes.

Know What Is In Your Makeup – Never wear or purchase makeup which is not labeled. Not only is it impossible to know what ingredients may be in it which may harm you, it is also illegal. According to the FDA, all eye cosmetics are required to have an ingredient declaration according to the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act or FPLA.  Note: Many colors are disallowed for use around the eyes as they are known to be harmful to the eye. Be sure you know what is and is not legal and avoid those which could potentially inflict harm. Kohl is an additive which is unapproved for cosmetic use in the U.S. Be sure to avoid this additive.

Use Caution When Considering Eyebrow and Eyelash Dyes – Permanent tints have been known to cause serious eye injuries. There are no color additives approved by FDA for permanent dyeing or tinting of eyelashes and eyebrows.

Use Caution When Consider False Eyelashes or Extensions – This type of product requires the use of adhesives, which may be dangerous. Remember that eyelids are sensitive and adhesives can be harsh and use caution when considering this product.

Pay Attention To Your Reaction – When using any cosmetics, be sure to monitor your reactions. If you notice a reaction, stop using it right away and contact your health care provider.
