Dry Eye & Tears

Tears lubricate eyes and make it possible to see the world clearly.

Dry eye is one of the most commonly treated eye problems in the United States, affecting more than 19 million people.

When you blink a tear film spreads over the eye, this film is made up of three distinct layers including oil, water and mucus.

Oil

This is the outermost layer of your tear and serves as a protective layer to help prevent your eye from drying out. Various fats in the outer oil layer slow evaporation.

Water

The water layer in your tears is generally the thickest layer and contains electrolytes like potassium and sodium as well as glucose and proteins which are mostly enzymes.

Mucin or mucus layer

The mucin layer is the layer of your tear which is directly in contact with the surface of your eye. This layer not only lubricates the eye but also provide nourishment to your eyes as well.

These components are produced by glands in individual layers, called the mucus, middle aqueous and lipid layers, that work together to keep eyes flushed and lubricated. As we age, our bodies produce less oil, sometimes causing thinning of the outer lipid layer, resulting in insufficient tear production and faster evaporation of the tears that moisten the eye. Over time, dry spots form on the ocular surface causing unsightly redness, burning, itching, blurred vision that improves with blinking, increased discomfort while reading, watching television or using a computer, and excessive tearing.

Left untreated, dry eye syndrome can lead to eye infections and corneal scarring. Most cases of dry eye are the result of the normal aging process; however, the condition is more common in women. Prolonged exposure to air conditioning or hot, dry conditions can worsen symptoms of dry eye. To protect your vision and your health, drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily and remember to blink often to refresh your eyes.

The specific composition of tears may change day to day and depend on your general health and other conditions. When your tears oare out of balance, it can lead to other issues with your eye such as dry eyes.
