Vanderbilt is a small community located in Otsego County, Michigan with a population of just 562 people according to the most recent census.  In 1875, the land was originally owned by the Vanderbilt family who were responsible for bringing the Michigan Central Railroad through the town. The railroad, which was also owned by the Vanderbilt family, helped establish the community and in 1901, the village of Vanderbilt was formally incorporated. Vanderbilt is commonly known to people in the area as the “Gateway to the Pigeon River Country State Forest”.  The Pigeon River Country State Forest is a large, isolated and rugged forest that is spread out over 105,000 acres. The forest is home to Michigan’s largest population of the Michigan elk herd and camping enthusiasts who enjoy rustic nature. The roads in the park are often no better than dirt two tracks and camp sites offer a bare minimum of conveniences.  Despite the lack of modern development, the forest is a popular place for fishing in the many small lakes and rivers that dot the land.  The 70 mile hiking trail is a favorite for serious backpackers. Though there are shorter options, hiking the entire trail can take up to a week. A really bad time to camp might have been when Vanderbilt beat the record for the coldest day ever in Michigan. In February of 1934 the temperature fell to a bone chilling -51 degrees.
